Student Streams Monitoring Program (SSMP)

What is the Student Streams Monitoring Program?

The Student Streams Monitoring Program (SSMP) is designed to build bridges between youth, science and community watershed groups in order to monitor the health of our local waterways.

What the Students Will Do:
  • Monitor a stream up to 4 times within the school year.
  • Use state-of-the-art field equipment to test water quality.
  • Sample benthic macroinvertebrates.
  • Complete an introductory stream habitat survey.
  • Analyze the collected data

What is Required?

  • Groups of four or five.
  • Transportation to and from the site.
  • Commitment to 3 or 4 two and a half hour stream monitoring sessions within a school year.
  • Analyze the data and produce a "State of the Stream" report.

The following is provided by LEPS:

  • An introductory presentation about the SSMP (up to one hour which includes a slide show).
  • State-of-the-art field equipment.
  • Program manuals.
  • On-site program leading.

Benefits for Teachers:

  • Monitoring sites that will be as close to the school as possible.
  • No background knowledge required.
  • No preparation required.
  • Teacher training is provided.

Benefits for Students

  • Experience in field methodology, data collection, analysis and report writing.
  • Direct experience for students interested in pursuing a career in the environmental field.
  • Student recognition.
  • Increased youth voice in watershed stewardship activities.
