LEPS, the Township of Langley, and BC Hydro have teamed up to create a bursary fund. The bursary fund was designed for individuals who volunteer, train, or work with LEPS, to pursue advanced education in the environmental field. The bursary fund was established with the assistance of the VanCity Community Foundation, which holds the fund in trust. The VanCity Community Fund is an endowment-based institution, encouraging individuals and organizations to make gifts in perpetuity, which generate income year-to-year for bursary disbursements.
The creation of the bursary fund was the idea of Township Councilor Mel Kositsky, who won a $1,000 scholarship from BC Hydro at the 1998 Union of British Columbia Municipalities Convention. Councilor Kositsky donated the money to LEPS to establish the fund, instead of making a one-time award, which had been past practice. Now our goal is to reach a minimum of $15,000 to create a fund in perpetuity.
To apply for a bursary, an individual must volunteer a specified amount of time to LEPS projects. Applications are available upon completion of volunteer hours.
